Tenses: Present Simple vs Present Continuous

Understanding the difference between the Present Simple and Present Continuous tenses is essential for 1st Year Secondary School literary stream students (شعبة آداب).

1. Present Simple

Used for facts, habits, routines, and permanent situations.

Form: Subject + verb (s/he/it: verb+s/es/ies)

Examples:

• I wake up at 7 every day. (routine)
• Water boils at 100°C. (fact)
• She speaks English and French. (permanent state)
• They do not eat meat. (negative)
• Does he play football? (question)

2. Present Continuous

Used for actions happening now, temporary situations, and planned future arrangements.

Form: Subject + am/is/are + verb-ing

Examples:

• I am studying right now. (action in progress)
• She is reading a book at the moment. (now)
• They are staying at a hotel this week. (temporary)
• We are meeting friends tonight. (future plan)
• He is not working today. (negative)
• Are you listening? (question)
