English – Making Requests, Offers, and Suggestions – BAC Literary Stream
Knowing how to make polite requests, offers, and suggestions is an important part of communicative competence for the BAC exam. These structures are frequently tested in the writing and speaking sections.
Making Requests:
- Can you…? (informal): “Can you help me with this?”
- Could you…? (more polite): “Could you open the door, please?”
- Would you…? (polite): “Would you mind closing the window?”
- Would it be possible to…? (formal): “Would it be possible to reschedule the meeting?”
- I was wondering if you could… (very formal): “I was wondering if you could help me with my project.”
Responding to Requests:
Positive: “Sure.” / “Of course.” / “Certainly.” / “No problem.” / “I’d be happy to.”
Negative: “I’m sorry, I can’t.” / “I’m afraid I can’t.” / “I wish I could, but…”
Making Offers:
- Can I…?: “Can I help you carry those bags?”
- Shall I…?: “Shall I open the window?”
- Would you like me to…?: “Would you like me to explain the lesson again?”
- Let me…: “Let me help you with that.”
- I’ll… if you want: “I’ll make coffee if you want.”
Making Suggestions:
- Let’s + verb: “Let’s go to the cinema tonight.”
- Why don’t we/you…?: “Why don’t we study together?” / “Why don’t you ask the teacher?”
- How about / What about + gerund?: “How about going for a walk?” / “What about visiting the museum?”
- We could…: “We could try a different approach.”
- I suggest/recommend + gerund: “I suggest reading the text carefully.”
- It might be a good idea to…: “It might be a good idea to start early.”
Responding to Suggestions:
Positive: “Great idea!” / “That sounds good.” / “Why not?” / “I agree.” / “Good point.”
Negative: “I don’t think so.” / “I’m not sure about that.” / “That’s a good idea, but…” / “I’d rather not.”
BAC Example Dialogue:
A: “I’m having trouble with my English homework. Could you help me?”
B: “Sure, I’d be happy to. Let’s study together this afternoon.”
A: “That sounds great! How about meeting at the library at 3 pm?”
B: “Perfect. Shall I bring my notebook?”
A: “Yes, please. And why don’t we ask Ahmed to join us?”
B: “Good idea! I’ll call him.”
