English – Describing People and Places – BAC Literary Stream
The ability to describe people and places is an important skill for the writing section of the BAC exam. Using appropriate vocabulary and structures will help you create vivid and detailed descriptions.
Describing People (Physical Appearance):
- Height: tall, short, medium-height, average height
- Build: slim, thin, slender, plump, overweight, muscular, well-built
- Face: round, oval, square, thin, chubby, wrinkled
- Eyes: big, small, round, almond-shaped; blue, brown, green, black, hazel
- Hair: long, short, straight, curly, wavy, bald; blond, brunette, red, grey, black
- Nose: straight, aquiline, flat, pointed, snub
- Skin: fair, pale, dark, tanned, olive, freckled
- Age: young, old, middle-aged, elderly, in his/her twenties/thirties
Describing People (Personality):
- Positive: kind, generous, friendly, honest, hardworking, intelligent, funny, patient, reliable, thoughtful
- Negative: selfish, stubborn, lazy, dishonest, rude, impatient, arrogant, jealous, aggressive
- Neutral: quiet, serious, shy, talkative, ambitious, independent, sensitive
Describing Places:
- Location: in the north/south/east/west of, on the coast, in the mountains, in the countryside, in the city centre, near, next to, opposite, between
- Size: huge, enormous, large, spacious, tiny, small, narrow
- Appearance: beautiful, magnificent, impressive, ugly, shabby, modern, ancient, well-kept, polluted, clean
- Atmosphere: lively, bustling, peaceful, quiet, relaxing, calm, noisy, crowded, busy
- Features: historic monuments, modern buildings, parks, gardens, beaches, mountains, rivers, lakes, squares, markets
Useful Structures for Description:
- “There is/are…” – “There is a beautiful park in the city centre.”
- “It has…” – “The house has a large garden and a swimming pool.”
- “It is located/situated…” – “The city is located on the Mediterranean coast.”
- “It looks/seems/appears…” – “The old town looks fascinating.”
- “He/She is… (adjectives)” – “She is a tall, slim woman with long curly hair.”
- “He/She wears…” – “She wears glasses and trendy clothes.”
- “What I like most about…” – “What I like most about this place is its peaceful atmosphere.”
BAC Example Paragraph:
“My best friend Ahmed is a tall, well-built young man in his early twenties. He has short black hair and big brown eyes. Ahmed is an intelligent and hardworking person who always helps others. He is also very funny and has a great sense of humour. He lives in a modern apartment in Algiers, which is a bustling city located on the Mediterranean coast. The apartment is spacious and has a wonderful view of the sea.”
