Past Tenses: Simple Past, Past Continuous, Past Perfect
Mastering past tenses is essential for narrative writing and grammar exercises in the BAC exam.
Simple Past:
Used for completed actions in the past. Regular: -ed (worked, studied), irregular (went, ate, wrote). Exemple: “I visited Algiers last year.” / “She wrote a letter yesterday.” Time expressions: yesterday, last week, in 2020, two days ago.
Past Continuous:
Used for actions in progress at a specific past time. Form: was/were + verb-ing. Exemple: “I was studying at 8 pm last night.” / “They were playing football when it started to rain.” Common use: interrupted action (past continuous + when + past simple).
Past Perfect:
Used for actions that happened before another past action. Form: had + past participle. Exemple: “When she arrived, the train had already left.” / “I had finished my homework before I went out.” Often used with: already, just, never, before, after, by the time.
Comparison:
- Past Simple: completed action. “I ate dinner.”
- Past Continuous: action in progress. “I was eating dinner when the phone rang.”
- Past Perfect: action before another past action. “I had eaten dinner before he arrived.”
BAC Example 2022:
“Complete: ‘When I (arrive) ______, they (already/leave) ______.’ → ‘arrived, had already left'”
