Future Tenses: Will, Going to, Present Continuous
English has several ways to express the future. Each has a specific use. Understanding the differences is essential for the BAC exam.
Will + base verb:
- Predictions: “It will rain tomorrow.”
- Spontaneous decisions: “I’ll answer the phone.”
- Promises: “I will help you.”
- Offers: “I’ll carry your bag.”
- Requests: “Will you open the door?”
Going to + base verb:
- Plans and intentions: “I’m going to study medicine.”
- Predictions based on evidence: “Look at those clouds! It’s going to rain.”
Present continuous (for future):
- Arrangements: “I’m meeting my friend tomorrow.”
- Fixed plans with specific time/place: “We’re leaving at 6 pm.”
Present simple (for future):
- Timetables and schedules: “The train leaves at 8 am.”
- Fixed events: “The exam starts next Monday.”
Future perfect and future continuous:
- Future continuous (will be doing): action in progress at a specific future time. Ex: “This time next year, I will be studying at university.”
- Future perfect (will have done): action completed before a specific future time. Ex: “By 2028, I will have graduated.”
BAC Example 2022:
“Complete: ‘I can’t come tonight. I (meet) ______ my parents.’ → ‘am meeting'”
BAC Example 2023:
“By the end of this year, the government (build) ______ ten new schools.” → ‘will have built'”
