Modal Verbs: Can, Could, May, Might, Must, Should, Would
Uses of modals:
- Can: ability (I can swim), permission (Can I go?), possibility (It can rain).
- Could: past ability (I could run fast), polite request (Could you help?).
- May: permission (May I enter?), possibility (It may rain).
- Might: less certain possibility (It might snow).
- Must: obligation (You must study), deduction (He must be tired).
- Should/Ought to: advice (You should see a doctor).
- Would: polite request (Would you mind?), habit (When young, I would play).
Negative forms:
Cannot/can’t, could not, may not, must not/mustn’t (prohibition), needn’t/don’t have to (no obligation).
Exercice BAC 2023:
Choose the correct modal: “You _____ (must/should) brush your teeth before bed.” → should (advice). “You _____ (must/can) not smoke here.” → must (prohibition).
