Relative Clauses: Defining and Non-Defining

Defining Relative Clauses:

Essential information. No commas. Who/that for people, which/that for things.
Ex: “The man who lives next door is a teacher.”

Non-Defining Relative Clauses:

Extra information. Commas. Cannot use “that”.
Ex: “My father, who is a doctor, works hard.”

Relative pronouns:

• Who → people (subject)
• Whom → people (object, formal)
• Which → animals/things
• That → people/things (defining only)
• Whose → possession
• Where → place
• When → time

Exercice BAC 2022:

Join the sentences: “I met a woman. She speaks five languages.” → I met a woman who speaks five languages.
