Reported Speech: Statements, Questions, Commands

Statement:

Direct: He said, “I am tired.” → Reported: He said that he was tired.
Verb tense backshift: present→past, past→past perfect, will→would.

Questions:

Direct: She asked, “Are you coming?” → Reported: She asked if I was coming.
Direct: He asked, “Where do you live?” → Reported: He asked where I lived.

Commands/Requests:

Direct: “Sit down!” → Reported: He told me to sit down.
Direct: “Don’t smoke!” → He told me not to smoke.

Time/Place changes:

now→then, today→that day, yesterday→the day before, tomorrow→the next day, here→there.

Exercice BAC 2020:

Transform: “I will call you tomorrow,” he said. → He said that he would call me the next day.
