Making Suggestions: Let’s, Why don’t we, How about

Making suggestions is an important communicative function in English, frequently tested in the BAC written and oral expression sections.

Common expressions for making suggestions:

• Let’s + base verb: “Let’s go to the cinema.” (informal, inclusive)
• Why don’t we/you + base verb? “Why don’t we visit the museum?” (polite suggestion)
• How/What about + noun/gerund? “How about going for a walk?” / “What about a coffee?”
• Shall we + base verb? “Shall we start?” (formal, polite)
• We could + base verb: “We could try the new restaurant.” (tentative suggestion)
• I suggest/recommend + gerund: “I suggest studying together.”
• Would you like to + base verb? “Would you like to join us?” (polite invitation)

Responding to suggestions:

• Accepting: “Good idea!” / “That sounds great!” / “I’d love to.” / “Why not?”
• Declining politely: “That sounds nice, but…” / “I’m not sure about that.” / “Maybe another time.” / “I’d rather not.”
• Alternative: “That’s a good idea, but how about…?” / “I’d prefer to…”

BAC Example 2022:

Task: Your friend wants to improve their English. Make three suggestions using different expressions.

Model answer: “Why don’t you watch English movies? You could also read English books. How about joining a language club?”
