1. Introduction
“There is” and “There are” are used to indicate the existence of something. They correspond to “يوجد” or “هناك” in Arabic.
- There is + singular noun → There is a book on the table.
- There are + plural noun → There are books on the table.
2. Forms
2.1 Affirmative
- There is a pen in my bag. (يوجد قلم في حقيبتي)
- There are two pens in my bag. (يوجد قلمان في حقيبتي)
- There is some water in the glass. (يوجد بعض الماء في الكأس)
2.2 Negative
- There is not (isn’t) a pen in my bag.
- There are not (aren’t) any pens in my bag.
- There is no water in the glass.
2.3 Interrogative
- Is there a pen in your bag? → Yes, there is. / No, there isn’t.
- Are there any pens in your bag? → Yes, there are. / No, there aren’t.
- How many pens are there in your bag?
3. Using Quantifiers
- Some in affirmative sentences: There are some chairs in the room.
- Any in negative and questions: There aren’t any chairs. / Are there any chairs?
- No = not any: There is no chair in the room.
4. Contracted Forms
- There is → There’s (There’s a book on the desk.)
- There is not → There isn’t
- There are not → There aren’t
