📝 Lesson Explanation
What is Active Voice?
In active voice, the subject performs the action.
Example: The student wrote the essay. (Subject = The student, performs the action)
What is Passive Voice?
In passive voice, the subject receives the action. The object of the active sentence becomes the subject.
Example: The essay was written by the student.
Formation of the Passive Voice
Passive = Subject + be (conjugated) + Past Participle (+ by agent)

When to use the Passive Voice
- When the agent is unknown: My phone was stolen.
- When the agent is obvious: English is spoken in many countries.
- When we want to focus on the action/result: The hospital was built in 2020.
- In formal and scientific writing
Important Notes
- Only transitive verbs (verbs that take an object) can be used in passive voice
- The agent is introduced with “by”
- The object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence
📌 BAC-Style Exercises
Exercise 1: Rewrite the sentences in passive voice.
- The Algerian government built many schools. → Many schools were built by the Algerian government.
- The students should respect the rules. → The rules should be respected by the students.
- Someone has stolen my wallet. → My wallet has been stolen.
Exercise 2: Turn from passive to active.
- The letter was written by the secretary. → The secretary wrote the letter.
- The exam will be corrected by the teacher. → The teacher will correct the exam.
Exercise 3 (BAC Style): Rewrite the following sentences as indicated.
a. The government will announce the results next week. (Passive) → The results will be announced by the government next week.
b. The project must be completed before June. (Active) → The workers must complete the project before June.
c. Researchers have discovered a new vaccine. (Passive) → A new vaccine has been discovered by researchers.
