Lesson Explanation:
1. Simple Past (Past Simple)
We use the Simple Past to talk about completed actions or events in the past.
Form:
Affirmative: Subject + V-ed (or irregular past form) + complement.
Example: I visited Paris last year. / She went to school yesterday.
Negative: Subject + did not (didn\’t) + base verb + complement.
Example: They didn\’t watch TV last night.
Interrogative: Did + subject + base verb + complement?
Example: Did you see the film?
Uses:
- A completed action in the past: I bought a new car yesterday.
- A series of completed actions: He entered the room, sat down, and opened his book.
- Past habits or states: She always walked to school when she was young.
2. Past Continuous (Past Progressive)
We use the Past Continuous to describe actions in progress at a specific time in the past.
Form:
Affirmative: Subject + was/were + V-ing + complement.
Example: I was reading a book at 8 PM yesterday.
Negative: Subject + was/were + not + V-ing.
Example: They were not (weren\’t) playing football.
Interrogative: Was/Were + subject + V-ing?
Example: Was she sleeping when you called?
Uses:
- An action in progress at a specific past time: At 7 o\’clock, I was having dinner.
- Two simultaneous past actions: While I was cooking, he was watching TV.
- Background action interrupted by another action: I was walking home when it started to rain.
3. Differences between Simple Past and Past Continuous
Simple Past: Focuses on completed actions. Example: I wrote a letter yesterday. (completed)
Past Continuous: Focuses on ongoing actions. Example: I was writing a letter when he arrived. (in progress)
Simple Past: Used for short, finished actions. Example: She dropped the glass.
Past Continuous: Used for longer, background actions. Example: She was carrying a heavy box.
4. Time Expressions
Simple Past: yesterday, last week, last year, in 2010, two days ago, then, etc.
Past Continuous: at 5 PM, at this time yesterday, while, when, as, etc.

Exercise 1: Complete the sentences with the correct form (Simple Past or Past Continuous):
a. I (read) a book when the phone (ring).
b. She (have) dinner at 8 PM last night.
c. They (watch) TV when the lights (go out).
d. He (not/go) to school yesterday because he (be) ill.
e. While we (play) football, it (start) to rain.
Exercise 2 – BAC style: Rewrite the following paragraph using the correct past tenses:
Yesterday, Ahmed (wake) up at 6 AM. He (have) breakfast and (leave) for school. While he (walk) to school, he (meet) his friend Karim. They (go) together.
