Expressing Concession in English: Although, Despite, In Spite of, However, Nevertheless — 3rd Year Secondary (Bac)

I. What is Concession?

Concession expresses contrast or opposition between two ideas. We acknowledge a fact before presenting a contrasting one.

II. Structures for Concession

1. Although / Though / Even Though (+ clause)

Used before a complete clause. They are subordinating conjunctions.

  • Although it was raining, they continued the match.
  • Even though he studied a lot, he didn’t pass.

2. Despite / In Spite Of (+ noun / gerund)

Used before a noun or gerund. They are prepositions.

  • Despite the traffic, we arrived on time.
  • In spite of feeling tired, she finished her homework.
  • Despite his disability, he became successful.

Note: To use before a clause: “Despite the fact that …”

3. However / Nevertheless (+ new sentence)

Conjunctive adverbs that begin a new sentence.

  • The weather was terrible. However, we went hiking.
  • The experiment failed. Nevertheless, the scientists continued.

Exercise 2 (Bac 2019): Join using a concessive expression:

Answer: Although technology has advanced, the digital divide persists.
