I. What is Concession?
Concession expresses contrast or opposition between two ideas. We acknowledge a fact before presenting a contrasting one.
II. Structures for Concession
1. Although / Though / Even Though (+ clause)
Used before a complete clause. They are subordinating conjunctions.
- Although it was raining, they continued the match.
- Even though he studied a lot, he didn’t pass.
2. Despite / In Spite Of (+ noun / gerund)
Used before a noun or gerund. They are prepositions.
- Despite the traffic, we arrived on time.
- In spite of feeling tired, she finished her homework.
- Despite his disability, he became successful.
Note: To use before a clause: “Despite the fact that …”
3. However / Nevertheless (+ new sentence)
Conjunctive adverbs that begin a new sentence.
- The weather was terrible. However, we went hiking.
- The experiment failed. Nevertheless, the scientists continued.
