Past Simple: Regular and Irregular Verbs

The Past Simple is used to talk about completed actions in the past. It is formed by adding -ed to regular verbs, while irregular verbs have special forms.

Regular verbs

Add -ed: work -> worked, play -> played, study -> studied (y -> ied), stop -> stopped (double consonant). Pronunciation: /t/ (worked), /d/ (played), /id/ (wanted).

Irregular verbs

go -> went, have -> had, do -> did, see -> saw, eat -> ate, drink -> drank, write -> wrote, read -> read (same), speak -> spoke, take -> took, give -> gave, come -> came.

Negative and question

Negative: subject + did not (didn’t) + base verb. I did not go.
Question: Did + subject + base verb? Did you see him?

Examples

I visited Paris last year. She went to the cinema yesterday. They did not finish their homework.

Exercises

Exercise 1: Complete: (1) I ____ (go) to school yesterday. (2) She ____ (buy) a new dress. (3) They ____ (not/see) the film.

Exercise 2: Make questions: (1) you / visit / your grandmother? (2) he / eat / breakfast?
