Writing an Informal Letter: Structure and Phrases
Informal letters are written to friends and family. They have a personal and conversational tone. This lesson covers the structure and useful phrases.
Structure of an informal letter
- Address and date: Top right corner
- Salutation: Dear…, Hi…, Hello…
- Opening: How are you? I hope you’re well. Thanks for your letter.
- Body: The main content, divided into paragraphs
- Closing: I’m looking forward to hearing from you. Write soon.
- Signing off: Love, Best wishes, Yours, Take care + your name
Useful phrases
Opening: It was great to hear from you. Sorry for not writing sooner. Body: By the way,… Actually,… The reason I’m writing is… Closing: Anyway, I must go now. Hope to see you soon.
Example
Dear Ahmed, How are you? Thanks for your letter. I’m happy that you passed your exam… Write soon! Your friend, Karim.
