Plural Nouns: Regular and Irregular Forms
In English, nouns can be singular or plural. The plural form usually ends in -s or -es, but there are many irregular plurals to learn.
Regular plurals
- Add -s : book → books, cat → cats, pen → pens
- Add -es after -ch, -sh, -s, -x, -o : watch → watches, box ↂ boxes, bus ‒buses, tomato → tomatoes
- Consonant + -y → -ies : baby → babies, city → cities, story → stories
- Ending in -f or -fe → -ves : wolf → wolves, knife → knives, shelf → shelves
Irregular plurals
- man → men, woman → women, child ↂ children
- foot ↂ feet, tooth → teeth, goose ↂ geese
- mouse → mice, louse → lice
- sheep → sheep, fish ↂ fish, deer → deer (same form)
- person → people, ox → oxen
Nouns that are always plural
Some nouns are always plural : trousers, glasses, scissors, clothes, goods, thanks.
