Past Simple vs Past Continuous

Understanding the difference between Past Simple and Past Continuous is important for 1st Year Secondary literary stream students (شعبة آداب).

1. Past Simple

Use: Completed actions in the past, habits in the past.

Form: Subject + V2 (past) or did not + V1

• I visited Paris last year.
• She did not come to the party.
• Did you see the film?

2. Past Continuous

Use: Actions in progress at a specific time in the past, interrupted actions.

Form: Subject + was/were + V-ing

• I was studying at 8 PM yesterday.
• They were playing football when it started to rain.

3. When to use which

Past Simple	Past Continuous
Completed action	Action in progress
Short action	Longer action
I ate dinner.	I was eating dinner when you called.
She left at 5.	She was leaving when I arrived.
