Phrasal Verbs: Common Phrasal Verbs for the Baccalaureate
Phrasal verbs (verb + preposition/adverb) are very common in English. Learning them is essential for the Baccalaureate exam.
Common Phrasal Verbs
look look for (search), look after (take care), look forward to (anticipate), look up (find information), look into (investigate).
get get up (wake), get along (have good relations), get over (recover), get through (succeed), get on (board).
take take after (resemble), take care of (look after), take part in (participate), take off (remove/leave), take over (assume control).
come come across (find by chance), come from (originate), come up with (think of), come back (return).
go go on (continue), go through (experience), go out (leave/stop burning), go over (review).
Separable vs Inseparable
Separable: The object can go between the verb and particle. Ex: Put on your coat / Put your coat on.
Inseparable: The object must come after the particle. Ex: Look after your brother (not: look your brother after).
With pronouns: Separable phrasal verbs must separate: Put it on (not: put on it).
