English – Quantifiers: Some, Any, Much, Many, A lot of – BAC – Literary Stream
Quantifiers are words used before nouns to indicate the amount or quantity of something. They are essential for the BAC English exam. This lesson covers the most common quantifiers and their correct usage.
1. Some and Any
Some: Used in positive sentences and offers/requests: “I have some friends.” / “Would you like some coffee?”
Any: Used in negative sentences and questions: “I don’t have any money.” / “Do you have any questions?”
2. Much, Many, A lot of
Much: Used with uncountable nouns, usually in questions and negatives: “How much water do you need?” / “I don’t have much time.”
Many: Used with countable nouns: “How many books do you have?” / “Many people attended the concert.”
A lot of / Lots of: Used with both countable and uncountable nouns in positive sentences: “She has a lot of friends. / We have lots of milk.”
3. A few / A little / Few / Little
A few (countable, positive): “I have a few good friends.” (enough, some)
Few (countable, negative): “Few people came to the meeting.” (not enough, almost none)
A little (uncountable, positive): “There is a little milk left.” (enough, some)
Little (uncountable, negative): “There is little hope.” (not enough, almost none)
4. Each / Every
Each: Refers to individual members of a group: “Each student received a certificate.”
Every: Refers to all members collectively: “Every student passed the exam.”
5. Both / Neither / Either
Both (two): “Both answers are correct.”
Neither (not one nor the other): “Neither answer is correct.”
Either (one or the other): “You can choose either answer.”
Exercises
Exercise 1: Complete: “How _____ sugar do you need? / I have _____ books to read. / There isn’t _____ milk in the fridge.”
Exercise 2: Choose: “I have (a few / a little) friends in Algeria. / There is (a few / a little) water in the bottle.”
Exercise 3: Correct the mistakes: “I don’t have some money. / How many sugar do you want?”
