English – The Future Tenses: Will, Going to, Present Continuous – BAC – Literary Stream

English has several ways to express the future. This lesson covers the three main future forms: will, going to, and present continuous for future arrangements. Knowing when to use each form is essential for the BAC exam.

1. Will + Base Verb

Form: Subject + will + base verb (He will arrive tomorrow.)

Uses:

• Predictions about the future: “It will rain tomorrow.”
• Spontaneous decisions: “I’m tired. I will go to bed.” (decision made now)
• Promises and offers: “I will help you with your homework.”
• Facts about the future: “The sun will rise at 6 am tomorrow.”

2. Be Going To + Base Verb

Form: Subject + am/is/are + going to + base verb (She is going to study law.)

Uses:

• Plans and intentions: “We are going to visit our grandparents this weekend.”
• Predictions based on evidence: “Look at those clouds! It is going to rain.”

3. Present Continuous for Future

Form: Subject + am/is/are + verb-ing (I am meeting my friends tonight.)

Uses:

• Fixed arrangements and appointments: “She is flying to London next Monday.”
• Planned events with specific time/place: “We are having a meeting at 3 pm.”

4. Present Simple for Future (Scheduled events)

Used for timetables and schedules: “The train leaves at 7 pm.” – “The class starts at 8 am.”

Comparison

Will: prediction/promise/spontaneous: “I will call you later.”
Going to: plan/evidence: “I am going to buy a new car.”
Present Continuous: arrangement: “I am seeing the doctor tomorrow at 10.”

Exercises

Exercise 1: Complete: “I think it (rain) later. / She (visit) her aunt next week. / Wait, I (open) the door for you.”

Exercise 2: Choose the correct form: “According to the timetable, the bus (leaves / is leaving / will leave) at 6 pm.”
