English – The Past Tenses: Simple, Continuous, Perfect – BAC – Literary Stream
Mastering past tenses is crucial for the BAC exam in English. This lesson covers Past Simple, Past Continuous, and Past Perfect, explaining their forms, uses, and differences. It is designed for students of the Literary Stream.
1. Past Simple
Form: Subject + Verb-ed (regular) or irregular past form
Uses:
- Completed actions in the past: “She visited Paris last year.”
- Past habits: “He always walked to school when he was young.”
- Sequences of past events: “She woke up, had breakfast, and left for work.”
- Signal words: yesterday, last week/month/year, ago, in 1990
2. Past Continuous
Form: Subject + was/were + verb-ing
Uses:
- Actions in progress at a specific past time: “I was studying at 8 pm yesterday.”
- Background action interrupted by another action: “I was reading when she arrived.”
- Two simultaneous past actions: “While I was cooking, he was watching TV.”
3. Past Perfect
Form: Subject + had + past participle
Uses:
- Action completed before another past action: “She had already finished when I arrived.”
- Cause and effect in the past: “He was tired because he had worked all day.”
- With by the time, already, just, never, before: “They had never seen such a beautiful view.”
Comparison of Past Tenses
Past Simple = completed action: “I ate dinner at 7 pm.”
Past Continuous = action in progress: “I was eating dinner when you called.”
Past Perfect = action before another past action: “I had already eaten dinner when you called.”
Exercises
Exercise 1: Put the verbs in the correct past tense: “When I (arrive), she (leave) already. She (wait) for me for an hour.”
Exercise 2: Complete the story: “It (rain) heavily. The children (play) inside. Suddenly, they (hear) a loud noise.”
Exercise 3: Correct the mistakes: “I was seeing him yesterday. He has gone to London last week.”
