Introduction
In this lesson, we will study narrative writing: structure, elements and techniques for stories, according to the Algerian curriculum for 4th Year Middle School. Narrative writing is the art of telling a story. It can be fiction (imaginary) or non-fiction (real events). Good narrative writing engages the reader, creates vivid images, and conveys emotions. This lesson will teach you the essential elements of a story and how to structure your narrative effectively. Mastering narrative writing is important for the BEM exam and for expressing yourself creatively.
Main Concepts
The structure of a narrative: 1) Introduction (setting the scene: where and when the story takes place, introducing characters), 2) Rising action (the events that build up to the main conflict or problem), 3) Climax (the turning point of the story, the most exciting moment), 4) Falling action (events after the climax, leading to resolution), 5) Resolution (how the story ends, the problem is solved). This structure is often called the narrative arc or plot diagram. Not all stories follow this exactly, but understanding the structure helps you organize your ideas.
Key elements of narrative writing: Characters (who is in the story, their personality and appearance), Setting (where and when the story takes place), Plot (what happens in the story), Conflict (the problem or challenge), Theme (the main idea or message), Point of view (who tells the story: first person “I” or third person “he/she”). Narrative techniques: Use descriptive language (adjectives, adverbs, similes, metaphors), Include dialogue (conversation between characters), Create suspense (make the reader curious about what will happen next), Show emotions (describe how characters feel), Use time expressions (meanwhile, later, suddenly, finally). A good narrative makes the reader feel like they are experiencing the story themselves.
Examples and Practice
Writing prompt: Write a short story (150-200 words) beginning with “It was a dark and stormy night…” Include at least two characters, a clear setting, a conflict, and a resolution. Use descriptive language and dialogue. Plan your story before writing: decide on characters, setting, problem, and ending. After writing, check: Does your story have a clear beginning, middle and end? Did you use descriptive language? Is the dialogue natural? Does the story make sense? Practice regularly to improve your narrative writing skills.
