Introduction
In this lesson, we will study describing processes: sequencing words and passive voice, according to the Algerian curriculum for 3rd Year Middle School. Describing processes means explaining how something is made or how something happens step by step. This is an important skill in science, technology and everyday life. You will learn to use sequencing words to order the steps and the passive voice to focus on the action rather than the person doing it. This combination creates clear and objective descriptions of processes.
Main Concepts
Sequencing words (also called time connectors) help you order the steps of a process: First/Firstly/First of all (the first step), Then/Next/After that (subsequent steps), Later/Subsequently (later steps), Finally/Eventually/Lastly (the last step). Example: “First, the water is heated. Then, the tea bag is added. After that, the tea is left to steep for three minutes. Finally, it is poured into a cup.” Using these words makes your description clear and easy to follow. Without them, the steps would be confusing and disorganized.
The passive voice is often used in process descriptions because it focuses on what happens to something rather than who does it. Structure: subject + be (conjugated) + past participle (+ by agent if needed). Examples: “The coffee beans are harvested” (not “Farmers harvest the coffee beans”), “The milk is heated to 70 degrees” (not “Workers heat the milk”). When describing a process, use present simple passive for general processes and past simple passive for completed processes. Combine sequencing words with passive voice for a professional and objective description. Practice describing everyday processes like making coffee, baking a cake, or how a car engine works.
Examples and Practice
Exercise: Describe the process of recycling paper using sequencing words and passive voice. Use at least five steps and five sequencing words. Check your text: Did you use correct passive forms? Did you include all important steps? Is the order logical? Example: “First, waste paper is collected from recycling bins. Next, it is sorted and cleaned to remove impurities. Then, it is mixed with water to create pulp. After that, the pulp is pressed and dried to form new paper sheets. Finally, the paper is cut and packaged for distribution.”
