Introduction
In this lesson, we will study holidays and celebrations: vocabulary and traditions around the world, according to the Algerian curriculum for 2nd Year Middle School. Holidays and celebrations are an important part of every culture. They bring families and communities together and preserve traditions. Learning about different celebrations helps you understand other cultures and express yourself about these topics in English. This lesson will teach you vocabulary related to various celebrations and how to describe your own traditions.
Main Concepts
Islamic celebrations: Eid al-Fitr (celebrated after Ramadan), Eid al-Adha (Festival of Sacrifice), Laylat al-Qadr (Night of Power), Mawlid al-Nabawi (Prophet’s birthday), Muharram and Ashura. Vocabulary: prayer (salat), feast, charity (zakat), family gathering, new clothes, gifts, sweets, traditional dishes. International celebrations: New Year’s Day (January 1st), Christmas (December 25th), Easter, Valentine’s Day (February 14th), Mother’s Day, Earth Day (April 22nd). Vocabulary: fireworks, resolutions, decorations, cards, flowers, presents, party, parade.
Describing celebrations: Use phrases like “We celebrate by…”, “People usually…”, “It is a tradition to…”, “The most important part is…”, “Families gather to…”, “We prepare special food such as…”. Example: “Eid al-Fitr is celebrated after Ramadan. People wear new clothes, visit family and friends, and give gifts to children. We eat special sweets like baklava and cakes.” “Christmas is celebrated on December 25th. People decorate Christmas trees, exchange presents, and spend time with family.” Being able to describe celebrations helps you share your culture with others and learn about different traditions around the world. This vocabulary is useful for writing descriptions, giving presentations, and having conversations about cultural topics.
Examples and Practice
Exercises: Write a paragraph (80-100 words) describing your favourite celebration. Use at least five vocabulary words from this lesson. Answer the questions: How do you celebrate Eid in your family? What is your favourite part of the celebration? Create a poster about a celebration with pictures and descriptions. Compare two celebrations: what is similar and what is different? Present your favourite celebration to the class. Learning about celebrations helps us appreciate diversity and understand each other better.
