Conditional Sentences: Type 1, 2, 3 and Mixed Conditionals
Conditional sentences are essential for expressing hypotheses, possibilities, and imaginary situations. They are frequently tested in the BAC exam.
Type 0 (General Truth):
If + present simple, present simple. Exemple: “If you heat water to 100°C, it boils.”
Type 1 (Real/Probable):
If + present simple, will + base verb. Exemple: “If you study hard, you will pass the BAC exam.”
Type 2 (Unreal Present):
If + past simple, would + base verb. Exemple: “If I had more time, I would read more books.”
Type 3 (Unreal Past):
If + past perfect, would have + past participle. Exemple: “If I had studied medicine, I would have become a doctor.”
Mixed Conditionals:
If + past perfect (past condition), would + base verb (present result). Exemple: “If I had taken that job, I would be rich now.”
BAC Example 2022:
“If the government had invested more in education, the literacy rate would have increased significantly.” – Type 3 conditional expressing an unreal past situation.
BAC Example 2023:
“Unless the authorities take immediate action, the environmental situation will worsen.” – “Unless” = “if not”.
