Emphasis and Cleft Sentences: It is… that, What… is
Cleft sentences are used to emphasize a particular part of a sentence. They are essential for advanced writing and are frequently tested in BAC exams.
What are cleft sentences?
A cleft sentence divides a simple sentence into two parts to focus on one element.
Simple: “Ahmed won the prize.”
Cleft: “It was Ahmed who won the prize.” (emphasis on Ahmed)
Cleft: “What Ahmed won was the prize.” (emphasis on the prize)
Types of cleft sentences
It is/was + emphasized element + that/who + rest:
“It was yesterday that I met him.” “It is English that I study most.”
What + clause + is/was + emphasized element:
“What I need is a good rest.” “What surprised me was his reaction.”
The reason why… is that…:
“The reason why he succeeded is that he worked hard.”
Inversion for emphasis
“Never have I seen such beauty.” “Not only did he pass, but he also got the highest score.”
“Seldom do we have such good weather.” “Hardly had I arrived when the phone rang.”
