Descriptive Writing

Descriptive writing creates a vivid picture in the reader’s mind using sensory details.

The five senses in description

• Sight: Colors, shapes, sizes. Example: The golden sun set behind the purple mountains.
• Sound: Noises, voices. Example: The birds sang sweetly in the trees.
• Smell: Fragrances, odors. Example: The aroma of fresh bread filled the kitchen.
• Taste: Flavors. Example: The sweet mango juice was refreshing.
• Touch: Textures, temperature. Example: The soft fur of the kitten felt warm.

Using adjectives effectively

Instead of: a nice day → a beautiful sunny day. Instead of: a big house → a enormous Victorian house.

Using adverbs effectively

He walked slowly. She sang beautifully. The rain fell gently.
