Narrative Writing

Narrative writing tells a story. It can be real (autobiography) or imaginary (fiction).

Structure of a narrative

1. Beginning: Introduce characters, setting, and situation.
2. Middle: Develop the plot with events and conflicts.
3. End: Resolve the conflict and conclude the story.

Transition words for narratives

• First, then, next, after that, later, finally, in the end
• Suddenly, unexpectedly, fortunately, unfortunately
• Meanwhile, at the same time, a few moments later

Tips for good narrative writing

• Use past tenses (simple past, past continuous).
• Include descriptive details (sights, sounds, feelings).
• Use dialogue to make the story lively.
• Show, don’t tell: Instead of saying He was scared, say His hands were shaking.

Exercises

1. Write a short story about an exciting adventure.
2. Add transition words to a narrative paragraph.
3. Rewrite a simple sentence using descriptive language.
