So…That / Such…That

These structures are used to show cause and effect, emphasizing the degree of something.

So + adjective/adverb + that

Used with adjectives and adverbs. Example: The box was so heavy that I couldn’t lift it. He ran so fast that nobody could catch him.

Such + (a/an) + (adjective) + noun + that

Used with nouns. Example: It was such a hot day that we stayed indoors. They are such good students that the teacher is proud of them.

Difference between So and Such

• So + adjective: The film was so boring that I fell asleep.
• Such + (a) + noun: It was such a boring film that I fell asleep.

Exercises

1. Complete with so or such: It was ___ a beautiful day. The weather was ___ nice.
2. Join the sentences: The music was loud. We couldn’t hear each other.
3. Write 3 sentences using so…that and 3 using such…that.
