Third Conditional
The third conditional is used to talk about imaginary situations in the past — situations that did not happen.
Formation
If + past perfect, would have + past participle
Example: If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam.
Meaning
- It expresses regret or criticism about the past.
- It describes an unreal situation contrary to what really happened.
Examples
- If she had left earlier, she would have caught the bus. (She didn’t leave early, so she missed the bus.)
- If they had invited me, I would have gone. (They didn’t invite me, so I didn’t go.)
Short forms
I’d have = I would have. hadn’t = had not.
Exercises
- Complete: If I ___ (know), I ___ (come) earlier.
- Write third conditional sentences: I didn’t study, so I failed the exam.
