Wh-Questions
Wh-questions are used to ask for specific information. They begin with question words: Who, What, When, Where, Why, How.
Question Words
- Who: asks about a person. “Who is your teacher?”
- What: asks about a thing/action. “What is your name?” / “What do you do?”
- When: asks about time. “When is your birthday?” / “When do you wake up?”
- Where: asks about place. “Where do you live?” / “Where is the library?”
- Why: asks about reason. “Why are you late?” / “Why do you like English?”
- How: asks about manner/condition. “How are you?” / “How do you go to school?”
How + Adjective
- How old: age. “How old are you?”
- How many: countable quantity. “How many brothers do you have?”
- How much: uncountable quantity/price. “How much does it cost?”
- How often: frequency. “How often do you visit your grandparents?”
- How long: duration. “How long does the class last?”
Exercises
- Complete with the correct question word: “___ is your best friend? – ___ do you go to bed? – ___ is your favourite subject?”
- Make questions for these answers: “I am 12 years old – I live in Algiers – My birthday is in July”.
- Ask 5 questions to your classmate about their daily routine.
