Articles: A, An, The

Articles are words that define a noun as specific or unspecific. English has three articles: A, AN, and THE.

Indefinite Articles: A and AN

• A: used before consonant sounds. Ex: “a book, a house, a university (sounds like “you”)”
• AN: used before vowel sounds. Ex: “an apple, an hour (silent H), an umbrella”
• Use A/AN for singular countable nouns when mentioning something for the first time: “I saw a dog.”

Definite Article: THE

• Use THE when both speaker and listener know what is being referred to: “The dog I saw was brown.”
• Use THE for unique things: “the sun, the moon, the world”
• Use THE with superlatives: “the best, the most beautiful”
• Use THE with musical instruments: “play the guitar, play the piano”

No Article (Zero Article)

• With plural nouns in general: “Dogs are loyal animals.”
• With uncountable nouns in general: “Water is essential for life.”
• With meals: “have breakfast, eat lunch”
• With sports: “play football, play tennis”

2. Correct: “I have the book – It is a interesting story”.
3. Write a paragraph using all three articles correctly.
