Adjectives and Their Order

Adjectives are words that describe nouns. When using multiple adjectives, English follows a specific order.

What is an Adjective?

An adjective gives more information about a noun: size, color, shape, quality, etc.

Examples: “a big house, a beautiful garden, a red car”

Order of Adjectives

When using 2 or more adjectives, follow this order:

1. Opinion: beautiful, nice, ugly, wonderful
2. Size: big, small, tall, short, large
3. Age: old, new, young, ancient
4. Shape: round, square, flat, long
5. Color: red, blue, green, black, white
6. Origin: Algerian, French, Chinese, Italian
7. Material: wooden, plastic, metal, silk
8. Purpose: sleeping (bag), cooking (pot)

Example: “a beautiful big old round red Algerian wooden table”

Comparative and Superlative

• Comparative: adjective + -er (for short adj) or more + adjective (for long adj): bigger, more beautiful
• Superlative: the + adjective + -est or the most + adjective: the biggest, the most beautiful

Exercises

1. Put the adjectives in order: “a (red/beautiful/old) flower – a (wooden/big/round) table”.
2. Write comparative sentences: (big/small – tall/short – beautiful/ugly).
3. Describe your house using 5 adjectives.
