Grammar: The Past Perfect Tense

1. Formation

The Past Perfect tense is formed with had + past participle.

Subject	had	Past Participle	Example
I / You / He / She / It / We / They	had	seen / gone / eaten / written	She had already left.

Negative Form :

Subject + had not (hadn’t) + past participle

• I had not (hadn’t) finished my homework before dinner.
• They hadn’t arrived when the movie started.

Interrogative Form :

Had + subject + past participle + ?

• Had you studied before the exam?
• Had she eaten before leaving?

2. Uses of the Past Perfect

a. To show that an action happened before another action in the past :

• When I arrived at the station, the train had already left.
• She had finished her work before she went home.
• They had never been to Paris before their trip last year.

b. With time expressions :

• Already : By the time he called, I had already eaten.
• Just : She had just finished when the bell rang.
• Never / Ever : It was the best meal I had ever tasted.
• By the time / Before / After : By the time we arrived, they had already left.

c. In reported speech :

• Direct: “I saw the movie.” → Reported: He said he had seen the movie.
• Direct: “I have finished.” → Reported: She said she had finished.

3. Past Perfect vs. Past Simple

Past Simple	Past Perfect
I ate dinner. (completed action)	I had already eaten dinner when he arrived. (action before another past action)
She went to school. (simple past fact)	She had gone to school before I woke up. (earlier of two past actions)

Exercise 1: Complete the sentences with the Past Perfect of the verbs in parentheses.

1. When I arrived at the party, everyone already (leave) ______.
2. She (not finish) ______ her homework when her mother came home.
3. They were hungry because they (not eat) ______ anything all day.
4. After he (study) ______ hard, he passed the exam.
5. By the time we got to the cinema, the film (start) ______.

Exercise 2: Choose the correct tense (Past Simple or Past Perfect).

1. When I (arrive / had arrived) ______, the meeting (started / had started) ______.
2. She (told / had told) ______ me that she (never saw / had never seen) ______ such a beautiful place.
