In English, there are different ways to talk about the future. The two most common are “will” and “going to”. They have different uses and meanings.
1- Will + base verb
Formation: subject + will + base verb. Negative: will not (won’t). Question: Will + subject + base verb?
Uses:
- Spontaneous decisions: I’m thirsty. I will get a glass of water. (Decision at the moment of speaking)
- Predictions based on opinion: I think it will rain tomorrow. She will be a great doctor one day.
- Promises and offers: I will help you with your homework. I will call you later.
- Threats and warnings: If you don’t study, you will fail the exam.
2- Going to + base verb
Formation: subject + am/is/are + going to + base verb. Negative: am/is/are + not + going to. Question: Am/Is/Are + subject + going to?
Uses:
- Plans and intentions: I am going to study medicine at university. They are going to travel to Istanbul next summer.
- Predictions based on evidence: Look at those dark clouds! It is going to rain. (We can see the evidence)
- Arrangements: We are going to meet at 5 pm.
Key Differences
- Will = decision now / prediction based on opinion.
- Going to = plan before now / prediction based on evidence.
- Will = spontaneous. Going to = pre-meditated.
Examples
- “The phone is ringing.” – “I’ll get it!” (spontaneous)
- “I’m going to buy a new car next week.” (plan)
- “I think Algeria will win the match.” (opinion)
- “Look at the sky! It’s going to snow.” (evidence)
Exercises
- Fill in: A: Why are you buying eggs? B: I ___ (make) a cake.
- Choose: I think Algeria (will/is going to) win the African Cup.
- Correct: I will going to visit my grandmother tomorrow.
