The Past Simple and Past Continuous are two important past tenses in English. Understanding when to use each tense is essential for clear communication.

1- Past Simple

Formation: Subject + verb-ed (regular) or irregular past form. Negative: Subject + didn’t + base verb. Question: Did + subject + base verb?

Uses:

• Completed actions in the past: I visited Paris last year.
• Sequences of past events: He woke up, had breakfast, and went to school.
• Past habits: When I was young, I played football every day.
• Specific time in the past: She was born in 2005.

2- Past Continuous

Formation: Subject + was/were + verb-ing. Negative: Subject + wasn’t/weren’t + verb-ing. Question: Was/Were + subject + verb-ing?

Uses:

• Actions in progress at a specific past time: I was studying at 8 pm yesterday.
• Background actions: The sun was shining, and the birds were singing.
• Parallel actions: While I was cooking, he was watching TV.

3- When and While

• When + past simple (interrupting action): I was sleeping when the phone rang.
• While + past continuous (longer action): The accident happened while they were driving.
• While + past continuous, past continuous (parallel): While I was reading, my sister was listening to music.
• When + past simple, past simple (sequence): When he arrived, we had dinner.

Key Differences

• Past Simple = complete, finished action. Past Continuous = action in progress.
• Past Simple = short/finished action. Past Continuous = longer background action.
• When one action interrupts another: Past Continuous for the longer action, Past Simple for the shorter action.
