Conditionals: Type 0 and Type 1

Conditional sentences are used to describe situations where one action depends on another. There are different types of conditionals in English.

1. Type 0 Conditional (General Truth)

Structure: If + present simple, present simple.
Use: For general truths and scientific facts. Example: “If water reaches 100°C, it boils.”
Characteristics: Always 100% true. The if clause can be replaced with “when”.

2. Type 1 Conditional (Real Future)

Structure: If + present simple, will + base verb.
Use: For possible future situations. Example: “If it rains, I will stay home.”
Alternative modals: can, may, might, should, must. Example: “If you study hard, you can pass the exam.”

3. Word Order

If-clause first: “If you study, you will succeed.” (comma needed)
Main clause first: “You will succeed if you study.” (no comma)

4. Common Mistakes

Don’t use “will” in the if-clause: “If I will have time” → “If I have time”.
Don’t forget the comma when if-clause comes first.
Use the correct tense in each part.

5. Examples

Example 1: (Type 0) “If you heat ice, it melts.”
Example 2: (Type 1) “If she arrives early, we will start the meeting.”
Example 3: (Type 0) “If I am tired, I sleep badly.”
Example 4: (Type 1) “If they invite me, I will go.”
Example 5: (Type 1) “I will buy a car if I have enough money.”

Exercices

1. Complete: If it __ (rain), the grass __ (get) wet.
2. Complete: If she __ (study), she __ (pass) the exam.
3. Write 2 sentences for each conditional type.
