Comparatives and Superlatives

1. Comparatives (comparing two things)

• Short adjectives (1 syllable) : adj + -er + than
  tall > taller than, small > smaller than, big > bigger than, hot > hotter than
• Adjectives ending in -y : -y becomes -ier
  happy > happier than, easy > easier than, crazy > crazier than
• Long adjectives (2+ syllables) : more + adj + than
  beautiful > more beautiful than, expensive > more expensive than
• Irregular : good > better than, bad > worse than, far > farther/further than

2. Superlatives (comparing three or more things)

• Short adjectives : the + adj + -est
  tall > the tallest, big > the biggest, hot > the hottest
• Adjectives ending in -y : the + -iest
  happy > the happiest, easy > the easiest
• Long adjectives : the most + adj
  beautiful > the most beautiful, expensive > the most expensive
• Irregular : good > the best, bad > the worst, far > the farthest/furthest

3. As…as (equality)

He is as tall as his brother. (pas de difference)

She is not as/so tall as her sister. (difference)
