How to Write an Argumentative Essay

1. Structure

a) Introduction

1. Hook : Interesting fact, question, or statement to catch the reader’s attention.
2. Background : Brief context on the topic.
3. Thesis Statement : Your main argument in one sentence.

b) Body Paragraphs (usually 3)

Each paragraph should have :

1. Topic sentence : Main idea of the paragraph.
2. Supporting details : Examples, facts, statistics, quotes from experts.
3. Explanation : Why this supports your thesis.
4. Linking sentence : Connection to the next idea.

c) Conclusion

1. Restate thesis : In different words (do not repeat word for word).
2. Summarize key arguments : Briefly mention your main points.
3. Final thought : Call to action, prediction, or recommendation.

2. Useful Expressions

• Introducing arguments : Firstly, Secondly, Moreover, Furthermore, In addition
• Contrasting : However, On the other hand, Although, Nevertheless, In contrast
• Giving examples : For instance, For example, Such as, In particular
• Concluding : In conclusion, To sum up, Overall, Therefore, Consequently

3. Exercises

Exercise : Write a thesis statement for : “Should students wear school uniforms?”

Exercise 2 : Write a topic sentence for each of 3 body paragraphs on the topic of social media.

Answer Key (Example)

Thesis : School uniforms should be required because they promote equality, reduce distractions, and prepare students for professional environments.
