Grammar: The Future Tenses (Will, Going To, Present Continuous)
English has several ways to talk about the future. Understanding the differences between them is essential for the Baccalaureate exam.
Will + Base Verb
- Predictions: It will rain tomorrow.
- Spontaneous decisions: I’ll help you with that.
- Promises: I will always love you.
- Offers: I’ll carry your bag.
- Requests: Will you open the door?
Be Going To + Base Verb
- Plans and intentions: I’m going to study law.
- Predictions based on evidence: Look at those clouds! It’s going to rain.
Present Continuous for Future
- Arrangements (definite plans): I’m meeting my friends tonight at 8pm.
- Fixed events: The train is arriving at 6pm.
