Grammar: The Future Tenses (Will, Going To, Present Continuous)

English has several ways to talk about the future. Understanding the differences between them is essential for the Baccalaureate exam.

Will + Base Verb

• Predictions: It will rain tomorrow.
• Spontaneous decisions: I’ll help you with that.
• Promises: I will always love you.
• Offers: I’ll carry your bag.
• Requests: Will you open the door?

Be Going To + Base Verb

• Plans and intentions: I’m going to study law.
• Predictions based on evidence: Look at those clouds! It’s going to rain.

Present Continuous for Future

• Arrangements (definite plans): I’m meeting my friends tonight at 8pm.
• Fixed events: The train is arriving at 6pm.

Exercises

2. Explain the difference: “I will help you” vs “I am going to help you”.
