Lesson 2: Past Simple Tense
The Past Simple tense is used to describe actions that happened and finished in the past. It is one of the most common past tenses in English.
When to use the Past Simple
- Completed actions in the past: I visited my grandmother yesterday.
- A series of past actions: He woke up, had breakfast, and went to school.
- Past habits or states: When I was young, I played football every day.
Formation of the Past Simple
Affirmative: Regular Verbs
Regular verbs: verb + -ed

Spelling rules for -ed
- Most verbs: add -ed: work → worked, walk → walked
- Verbs ending in -e: add -d: live → lived, dance → danced
- Verbs ending in consonant + y: change y to i + -ed: study → studied, cry → cried
- Short verbs ending in consonant-vowel-consonant: double the last consonant + -ed: stop → stopped, plan → planned
Irregular Verbs
Some verbs do not follow the -ed rule. You need to memorize them:

Negative and Interrogative
- Negative: Subject + didn t + base verb: I didn t go to school yesterday.

- Complete the sentences:
a. I ___________ (visit) my aunt last week.
b. She ___________ (not/go) to the cinema yesterday.
