Part 1: What is the Imperative?

\n

The imperative is the base form of the verb (without to). We use it to tell someone to do something. In Arabic, it corresponds to صيغة الأمر (if’al / افعل).

\n\n

Structure: Verb (base form) + object / complement

\n\n

Examples:

\n

    \n

  • Open the door. (افتح الباب)
  • \n

  • Sit down. (اجلس)
  • \n

  • Listen to the teacher. (استمع إلى الأستاذ)
  • \n

  • Read the text. (اقرأ النص)
  • \n

  • Write your name. (اكتب اسمك)
  • \n

\n\n

Part 2: Negative Imperative (Don’t / Do not)

\n

To tell someone NOT to do something, we use Don’t (or Do not) + verb.

\n\n

Structure: Don’t + verb (base form) + object / complement

\n\n

    \n

  • Don’t run in the classroom. (لا تركض في القسم)
  • \n

  • Don’t eat in class. (لا تأكل في القسم)
  • \n

  • Don’t be late. (لا تتأخر)

  • \n

  • Stop at the corner. (توقف عند الزاوية)
  • \n

Part 6: Making Polite Requests (طلبات مهذبة)

\n

Add please to make commands more polite. Please can come at the beginning or the end of the sentence.

\n

    \n

  • Please open the window. (من فضلك افتح النافذة)
  • \n

  • Please help me with this exercise. (من فضلك ساعدني في هذا التمرين)
  • \n

  • Close the door, please. (أغلق الباب من فضلك)
  • \n

  • Please don’t make noise. (من فضلك لا تصدر ضجيجاً)
  • \n

\n\n

For very polite requests, we use Let’s (suggestions including the speaker):

\n

    \n

  • Let’s go to the library. (دعنا نذهب إلى المكتبة)
  • \n

  • Let’s start the lesson. (دعنا نبدأ الدرس)
