Articles: a, an, the and Zero Article
Introduction
Articles are words that define a noun as specific or unspecific. English has two types of articles: definite (the) and indefinite (a/an). There is also the zero article (no article). Choosing the correct article is essential for clear communication.
1. Indefinite Articles: A and An
Use "a" before consonant sounds and "an" before vowel sounds. They refer to non-specific nouns or first mention. Examples: "a book", "an apple", "an hour" (silent h). Cannot be used with plural nouns or uncountable nouns.
2. Definite Article: The
Use "the" when the noun is specific, unique, or already mentioned. Also used with superlatives, ordinal numbers, and before names of specific geographical features. Examples: "the sun" (unique), "the book you gave me" (specific), "the best student" (superlative), "the Mediterranean Sea".
3. Zero Article
No article is used with plural countable nouns and uncountable nouns in general statements. Also used before proper nouns, meals, sports, and some fixed expressions. Examples: "Dogs are loyal animals" (general), "I had breakfast" (meal), "He plays football" (sport), "Algeria is a beautiful country" (proper noun).
