📝 What are Modal Verbs?

Modal verbs (also called modals) are auxiliary verbs that express ability, possibility, permission, obligation, necessity, or advice. They are always followed by the base form of the main verb (without “to”).

Key features:

  • They do not take “-s” in the third person singular (He can — NOT He cans)
  • They form questions by inversion (Can I? — NOT Do I can?)
  • They form negatives by adding “not” (cannot, must not, should not)
  • They do not have infinitives or participles
