- Use the articles correctly with different types of nouns
- Know when to use zero article (no article)
- Apply the rules in writing and exam exercises
📝 I. Introduction
Articles are small words that come before nouns. In English, there are two types of articles: indefinite (a, an) and definite (the). Choosing the right article depends on whether the noun is countable/uncountable, singular/plural, specific/general, or mentioned for the first or second time.
📚 II. The Indefinite Article: A / An
Rules:
- Use a before words that begin with a consonant sound: a book, a university, a European country, a one-way street
- Use an before words that begin with a vowel sound: an apple, an hour, an honest person, an umbrella, an elephant
- Only used with singular countable nouns: a car ✅, an idea ✅, a cars ❌, an informations ❌
- Used when mentioning something for the first time: I saw a dog in the street.
- Used with professions and nationalities: He is a doctor. She is an Algerian.
- Used in exclamations with what + countable noun: What a beautiful day!
• a university (university starts with /juː/ — consonant sound)
• an hour (hour starts with /aʊ/ — silent h, vowel sound)
• a European (European starts with /jʊə/ — consonant sound)
📋 III. The Definite Article: The
Use “the” when:
- The noun is already known or mentioned before: I saw a dog. The dog was black.
- There is only one of something: the sun, the moon, the Earth, the president of Algeria
- It is clear from context: Please open the door. (the door of this room)
- With superlatives: the best, the tallest, the most important
- With ordinal numbers: the first lesson, the second chapter
- With geographical names: rivers (the Nile), seas (the Mediterranean), oceans (the Atlantic), mountain ranges (the Atlas Mountains), deserts (the Sahara)
- With musical instruments: play the guitar, play the piano
Do NOT use “the” when:
- Speaking in general (plural/uncountable): Dogs are loyal animals. / Water is essential.
- With most proper nouns: Algeria, Ahmed, Monday, January
- With meals: have breakfast, eat lunch, have dinner
- With sports and games: play football, play chess
- With school subjects: study Mathematics, learn English
- With cities, countries, continents: Algiers, France, Africa
📝 IV. Zero Article (No Article)
Sometimes no article is needed (zero article / article zéro):
| Case | Example |
|---|---|
| Plural nouns in general | Books are important for learning. |
| Uncountable nouns in general | Water is necessary for life. |
| Names of people, cities, countries | I live in Algeria. |
| Meals | We have lunch at noon. |
| Sports and games | She plays tennis. |
