\n

Subject: English (Grammar) |\nLevel: 1st Year Middle School |\nDuration: 1 session

\n\n

Learning Objectives

  • ✅ Understand the difference between definite and indefinite articles
  • \n

  • ✅ Know when to use “a” and when to use “an”
  • \n

  • ✅ Apply the rules with words that start with vowels and consonants
  • \n

  • ✅ Handle special cases (silent H, vowel U)
  • \n

\n\n

Introduction

\n

In English, we use articles before nouns. There are two types: definite (the) and indefinite (a/an). The indefinite articles “a” and “an” are used when we talk about something general or not specific. For example: “I have a book” (any book, not a specific one). In this lesson, you will learn when to use “a” and when to use “an”.

\n\n

Part 1 — The Basic Rule

\n

\n

\n

\n

\n

Article Use Examples
A Before words that begin with a consonant sound a boy, a cat, a dog, a house, a university
An Before words that begin with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u) an apple, an elephant, an igloo, an orange, an umbrella

\n\n

\n

Example:

\n

✅ I saw a bird in the garden. (bird starts with consonant sound ‘b’)
\n✅ She ate an orange. (orange starts with vowel sound ‘o’)
\n❌ I saw an bird. ✗
\n❌ She ate a orange. ✗

\n

\n\n

Part 2 — Special Cases

\n\n

Case 1: Words starting with “u”

\n

Some words beginning with “u” make a consonant sound /juː/ (like “you”). In this case, use “a”:

\n

    \n

  • a university (pronounced “yoo-niversity”)
  • \n

  • a uniform (pronounced “yoo-niform”)
  • \n

  • a unicorn (pronounced “yoo-nicorn”)
  • \n

  • an umbrella (pronounced “um-brel-la” — vowel sound)
  • \n

  • an uncle (pronounced “un-cle” — vowel sound)
  • \n

\n\n

Case 2: Words starting with silent “h”

\n

Some words begin with a silent “h”. The first sound is a vowel, so use “an”:

\n

    \n

  • an hour (the ‘h’ is silent — sounds like “our”)
  • \n

  • an honest person (silent ‘h’ — sounds like “onest”)
  • \n

  • a house (the ‘h’ is pronounced — consonant sound)
  • \n

  • a hospital (the ‘h’ is pronounced)
  • \n

\n\n

\n

Quick Tip

\n

The rule is about SOUND, not spelling. Listen to the first sound of the word. If the first sound is a vowel → use “an”. If the first sound is a consonant → use “a”.
