Passive Voice: Formation across All Tenses
The passive voice is used when the action is more important than the doer, or when the doer is unknown.
1. Formation
Subject + be (conjugated) + past participle (by + agent).
- Present Simple: The book is read.
- Past Simple: The book was read.
- Future: The book will be read.
- Present Perfect: The book has been read.
- Modal: The book must be read.
2. Examples
- Shakespeare wrote Hamlet. (active) → Hamlet was written by Shakespeare. (passive)
- Someone stole my bag. → My bag was stolen.
3. Exercises
- The students clean the classroom → The classroom _____ by the students.
- They will build a hospital → A hospital _____ .
