Transitive and Intransitive Verbs
Transitive verbs require a direct object to complete their meaning. Intransitive verbs do not take a direct object.
Transitive verbs
These verbs need an object. Examples: She read a book. He bought a car. They love their country.
If the object is removed, the sentence is incomplete: “She read” (read what?).
Intransitive verbs
These verbs do not need an object. Examples: The sun rises. She sleeps. He arrived.
Some verbs can be both: I run every day (intransitive). I run a business (transitive).
Exercise
Identify if the verb is transitive (T) or intransitive (I):
