Reading Comprehension Strategies
Reading comprehension is the ability to understand, analyze, and interpret written texts.
Strategies
- Preview the text: Look at the title, headings, images, and first sentences.
- Set a purpose: Why are you reading? What do you need to find out?
- Scan for specific information: Look for key words, dates, names.
- Skim for main ideas: Read the first and last paragraphs quickly.
- Read actively: Underline, highlight, take notes, ask questions.
- Use context clues: Infer meaning of unknown words from surrounding text.
- Summarize: After each paragraph, pause and summarize in your own words.
- Make connections: Text-to-self, text-to-text, text-to-world.
Types of questions
- Literal: information directly stated in the text
- Inferential: implied meaning, “read between the lines”
- Evaluative: opinion-based, what do you think?
