Adverbs of Frequency

Adverbs of frequency tell us how often an action happens. They answer the question “How often…?”

Common Adverbs of Frequency

• Always (100%): “I always brush my teeth before bed.”
• Usually (90%): “She usually walks to school.”
• Often (70%): “We often visit our grandparents.”
• Sometimes (50%): “He sometimes plays football.”
• Rarely (10%): “They rarely eat fast food.”
• Never (0%): “I never smoke.”

Position in Sentences

• Before the main verb: “She always arrives on time.”
• After the verb TO BE: “He is always happy.”
• In negative sentences: “I don’t usually eat breakfast.”
• At the beginning or end (for emphasis): “Sometimes, I read before bed.”

Exercises

1. Put the adverb in the correct position: “I get up early (always) – She is tired (often)”.
2. Answer using adverbs: “How often do you study? – Do you ever eat couscous?”
3. Write 5 true sentences about your habits using adverbs of frequency.
